Thirteen year old Becker Drane has only been a Fixer for a year and is finding it hard to keep it a secret. The Tide threatens to release a bomb and destroy the world if its demands are not met. But Becker is on a family vacation when it does and is called in to Fix it before everything falls apart.

This is a book many kids will love. The world is wonderfully realised, inventive and a lot of fun. The characters and the world are a delightful change with its multiculturalism but it is still largely American. However, every effort seems to have been made to represent a realistic world where bad things do happen.

The Split Second takes me back to my own childhood and the books I devoured. I’m sure this book will be the same for many young readers in years to come.
