At the execution of Madame Lupita things begin to go wrong for Chess. First she discovers someone smuggled a ghost into Madame Lupita, which kills an Elder and the executioner. Then Terrible won’t talk to her and she agrees to be bound to an oath to do a job with Black Squad member Lauren Abrams because she needs the money. Only nothing is as it seems.

What I like most about this book is the way it neatly links Madame Lupita back to Unholy Magic and the Lamaru back to Unholy Ghosts. Stacia Kane has managed to create a story that links back while moving it forward and, to my liking, doesn’t tie the story into a neat little bow. She’s left plenty of space for new stories.

Downside Ghosts is a world fabulously balancing the underside of city of city life with its more acceptable side and Chess Putnam stands in the middle trying to keep her world from spinning apart. I look forward to reading more of Chess, Terrible and Lex.
